Chip, a 2-year-old hound mix, has a nervous disposition, particularly around men. Previously adopted, he was returned after a few days due to his anxiety toward the male members of the household. Elina Alterman, chief development officer at the humane society, noted that while Chip might fare better in a female-led home, it is not a definitive requirement.
Recently, 11 members of the KU football team took Chip on an outing. Alterman remarked on how well he responded to their calm and patient demeanor.
Despite his challenges, Alterman believes Chip would have been adopted quickly under normal circumstances. He has been waiting for a home for six months after being transferred from a rural shelter where he was at risk of euthanasia. Volunteers describe him as curious, chill, cuddly, and well-trained. He walks well on a leash and interacts appropriately with other dogs.
Chip is both house- and kennel-trained. He should meet all potential family members, including any other dogs, before adoption, as he tends to be shy. His interactions with cats and younger children are unknown, but he previously liked the teenage daughter in his last home.
Currently neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, Chip's typical adoption fee of $150 is reduced to $25 through an ongoing adoption special until 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 11.
Other adoptable pets at the shelter include Bailey, Waylon, Moilie, Cowboy, Sammy, and Bob, all in need of loving homes. Interested adopters can contact the Lawrence Humane Society at [email protected] or call 785-843-6835 to meet Chip at the shelter, open daily from noon to 6 p.m. Potential foster parents can reach out via email to the Foster Coordinator.
