The annual pet adoption and donation initiative spanned August, with NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 collaborating with local shelters and rescue organizations to aid in pet adoptions.

Several shelters reported significant adoption numbers. The Nine Lives Foundation in Redwood City participated in Clear The Shelters for the first time this year, adopting out over 80 pets during an event on August 15.

Berkeley Humane celebrated 210 adoptions through its 14th annual Bark & Meow Around the Block event, which included the debut of the Pup Cup Café serving puppuccinos to pets. At the San Martin Animal Shelter, 68 pets were adopted during the Clear The Shelters event on August 29.

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue experienced its one of the highest adoption periods in 19 years, with 145 senior dogs finding homes throughout August.

Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48, remarked, “Seeing more than 6,000 pets find new homes across the Bay Area is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when our community comes together.” She expressed gratitude to local shelters and families who participated in the campaign.

The Bay Area’s adoptions were part of NBCUniversal Local’s broader Clear The Shelters campaign, which helped over 135,000 pets find homes and raised nearly $500,000 for participating shelters this year.

More than 100 NBC and Telemundo stations were involved in the 2026 campaign, collaborating with over 1,200 shelters across 153 markets in 47 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam.

Since its inception in 2015, Clear The Shelters has facilitated the adoption of nearly 1.5 million pets and generated over $6 million for shelters nationwide. Hill’s Pet Nutrition was the presenting sponsor for the 2026 campaign, supported by partners such as Greater Good Charities, WeRescue, and The Black Dog.
