Lake County, FL – In recognition of World Rabies Day on September 28, 2026, the Lake County Animal Shelter (LCAS) is organizing several events to raise awareness about rabies prevention. While rabies-related deaths in the U.S. are less than ten annually, the disease poses a significant threat globally, causing an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 deaths each year.

Recent alerts, including one in Marion County, highlight the ongoing risk of rabies exposure for pets.
The first event, “People, Pets and Wildlife,” will take place on Saturday, September 26, starting at 10 a.m. This family-friendly gathering will feature community partners and activities focused on protecting pets and wildlife from rabies. Attendees will receive a free voucher for a rabies vaccination and microchipping, redeemable at the LCAS’s Protect and Connect Clinic on September 28, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Those without vouchers can also receive these services for $5, and pre-registration is encouraged.
Additionally, LCAS will offer a free “Rabies 101” class focused on community cats on Wednesday, September 30, at 6 p.m.
All events will be held at the Lake County Animal Shelter, located at 12280 County Road 448 in Tavares.
