Happy Dogs 4 Life Prioritizes Enrichment and Play for Dogs in Hayden

The facility offers daycare, boarding, training, and grooming services, reflecting decades of combined experience. Gable has been a veterinarian in the Coeur d’Alene area for over 20 years, while Burgess has more than 30 years in the pet industry as a veterinary assistant, dog groomer, and dog trainer. Byrd, Burgess’s daughter, has spent 12 years in the industry, with eight focused on dog training.

The core philosophy of Happy Dogs 4 Life emphasizes play and enrichment. In addition to offering both indoor and outdoor play, trainers engage dogs with daily activities, primarily agility-focused, such as jumping through hula hoops and navigating tunnels. Byrd noted that these activities help reduce anxiety and minimize dogs' fixation on one another. "You get their mind off of it and work their brain. They love it," she said.

To ensure safety, larger breeds are given separate play areas from smaller breeds and puppies, with at least one trainer supervising each group. At the end of the day, trainers provide feedback to dog owners about their pets' behavior, which Byrd remarked is not common practice in many facilities. "Never is there going to be a dog that is absolutely perfect in a daycare setting. We build them up to be a better version of themselves in the play area," she explained.

Gable added that many owners have reported improvements in their dogs' behavior at home, resulting in a positive experience each time the dogs return to the facility. "Anxious dogs come in and happy dogs leave. It’s great to see," she said.
