Petideal, a pet food manufacturer based in Luohe, Henan province, has significantly grown over the past five years, now producing over 1 billion yuan ($149.2 million) in pet food annually. The company exports its products to 45 countries and regions and manufactures for more than 300 brands.

This growth symbolizes the evolution of Chinese contract manufacturers into technology-driven partners for global pet food companies. Petideal leverages a unique advantage by sourcing fresh meat locally, drawing from a meat processing plant just two kilometers away. The turnaround from ingredient arrival to production typically takes four to seven hours, which reduces reliance on freezing and streamlines the supply chain.
Chairman An Zhongping highlighted the advantages of Luohe's food industry ecosystem, citing the local availability of fresh ingredients, processing capacity, and skilled labor.
As pet ownership in China increases and international customers seek higher-quality products, manufacturers like Petideal are shifting focus from low-cost production to product development, food safety, and supply chain efficiency. An explained that overseas clients now prioritize suppliers based on research capabilities and quality control rather than just pricing.
Recently, a Canadian pet food company with over 70 years of history chose to transfer its supply chain to Petideal after two inspections of the facilities, and both companies are planning to establish manufacturing capacity in Canada.
Unlike traditional manufacturers that rely heavily on meat meal, Petideal specializes in fresh meat formulations. The company is also investing in sweet potato farms and meat powder production, aiming to enhance supply stability and reduce dependence on imported ingredients.
In terms of technology, Petideal is investing in digital manufacturing, having spent over 10 million yuan to develop its own intelligent manufacturing cloud platform, which provides real-time tracking of production, quality inspections, logistics, and raw material usage. Major clients can access dashboards to monitor production schedules and quality data remotely, which has become crucial for international customers.
The company has implemented advanced automated quality inspections, including double metal detection on production lines. As the pet economy in China continues to grow, with the consumer market surpassing 300 billion yuan annually and pet food representing about half of that spending, Petideal is expanding its production capacity. The company has completed two production phases in Luohe and operates a wet food factory in Shandong province. Construction of additional phases for baked kibble, freeze-dried products, and customized premium pet food is underway.
Additionally, Petideal is branching out internationally, with its first overseas factory in Oman set to begin operations this year. Plans are in place to establish two or three more overseas production bases within the next three years, aiming to build a global manufacturing network.
This strategy reflects a broader ambition among China's pet food manufacturers to move beyond being low-cost producers, with aspirations to export expertise in manufacturing, food technology, and supply chain management as demand for premium pet food rises.
