The Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force, in collaboration with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri Department of Agriculture, is rescuing over 100 animals from a Lawrence County property following concerns raised by a private citizen. Reports included distressing conditions noted in videos shared on social media, showing numerous animals confined in small wire cages.

Upon their arrival on the property on Tuesday, the Animal Cruelty Task Force described the situation as one of the worst hoarding cases encountered in over 40 years of service. Animals were found amidst significant trash accumulation and dense vegetation, with multiple dilapidated vehicles also present, including a school bus. Water access was limited to a single well and rainwater catchment areas.

This marks the third intervention by the Humane Society of Missouri at this location. In 2000, 31 dogs were removed, and in 2021, 27 animals were voluntarily surrendered after negotiations with the property owner. Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri, expressed concern about returning to a property with a history of animal welfare issues.

Chief communications officer Laura Keller emphasized that the task force seeks solutions before seizing animals but will act decisively if no remedy is found for the owner.

The rescued animals will be taken to Humane Society of Missouri facilities for medical examinations, treatment, food, and clean water. Their conditions will be assessed for specific care needs.

A disposition hearing to decide the permanent custody of the animals is set for October 26, 2026. Until the legal process concludes, the animals will remain in the Humane Society's care and will not be available for adoption.

For those wishing to support the organization in providing care for the rescued animals, donations can be made at HSMO.org/rescue. Individuals suspecting animal abuse or neglect are encouraged to contact local law enforcement or the Humane Society’s Animal Cruelty Hotline at 314-647-4400.

For over four decades, the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force has collaborated with law enforcement to investigate animal abuse and neglect and to rescue endangered animals.
