Service dogs reach a significant milestone when they graduate after six to nine months of training, recognized for their hard work before heading off to their forever homes. Canine Companions organized reunions with the puppy raisers to celebrate their latest graduating class. The dogs are placed with their raisers at eight weeks old and stay with them until they are a year and a half old to receive socialization and basic obedience training.

As graduation approached, many of the dogs had not seen their raisers for some time, making the reunions particularly heartfelt. Morgan Walker, director of public relations and marketing at Canine Companions, described the moments as filled with joy, featuring enthusiastic greetings marked by wagging tails and tearful pride. Some dogs ran straight into their raisers' laps, showcasing their excitement.
The organization documented reunions for several of the graduating dogs, including Maddox, Elrich, Reid, Peanut, Eva, Nugget, and Normandy. On August 14th, a total of 75 dogs successfully graduated, resulting in many emotional moments for their proud raisers.
Walker noted that for each dog, the reunion was a moment of gratitude, symbolizing the end of one journey and the beginning of another, where they would impact someone’s life significantly. With September being National Service Dog Month, Canine Companions aims to highlight the remarkable roles these dogs will play for their new human companions.
Currently, there are 1,241 puppies being raised by volunteers at Canine Companions, each looking forward to experiencing this heartfelt reunion in the future.
