Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) announced on October 6 that it has reached critical shelter capacity and is seeking assistance from the community. The announcement was made through a post on HAS's Facebook page, accompanied by two livestream updates regarding the situation.

The current capacity issue hasn't been caused by a single large-scale rescue event, such as the rescue of 77 animals earlier this year. Instead, it is attributed to a continuous influx of stray animals.

When operating at critical capacity, HAS may need to consider euthanizing animals to free up space, a situation the organization hopes to avoid. Community members are encouraged to help in several ways:

1. **Adoption**: Prospective pet owners can visit the HAS website to view animals available for adoption, or they can visit the shelter at 4950 SW Triana Blvd, Huntsville, AL 35805. The shelter hours are Monday and Wednesday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday from 9 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday from 9 AM to 3 PM. The shelter is closed on Sundays.

2. **Foster-to-rehome**: This program allows individuals to care for an animal until it is adopted, providing socialization and a temporary home.

3. **Foster-to-adopt**: This option offers a 14-day trial period with an animal before committing to permanent adoption.

4. **Sleep-over**: This new initiative enables individuals to take an animal home for short stays of 1-4 days, providing immediate relief without long-term commitment.

If adoption or fostering is not feasible, sharing the information with friends or colleagues can still make a significant impact.
