Panleukopenia attacks white blood cells, significantly lowering immune response. The virus is primarily spread by unvaccinated cats, which may appear healthy while still carrying the infection.
Animal Control has requested that the public refrain from bringing stray cats to the shelter unless absolutely necessary, citing the virus's ease of transmission. They acknowledged the concerns of those who wish to help strays but emphasized that introducing new cats could heighten the risk for both incoming and resident cats.
In response to the situation, officials are prioritizing the relocation of healthy cats to foster homes. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the shelter if they are willing to foster a cat.
