COLFAX, La. - Grant Parish Animal Control recently took a shelter dog, Roxy, to visit Legacy Nursing Home in Pollock as part of the “Ageless Innovation” program. This initiative uses both robotic pets and live animals to connect with residents, aiming to bring joy and reduce feelings of loneliness.

Deputy Brittany Pender noted the excitement among residents, many of whom had not seen a dog in quite some time. She highlighted how dogs can foster compassion and a sense of purpose for those in the nursing home.
This visit marked the first time Grant Parish Animal Control has taken a shelter dog off-campus to interact with older residents, despite previously inviting school groups and civic volunteers to the shelter. Roxy, a shy rescue dog, displayed a noticeable shift in demeanor during the trip, according to Michelle Pittman, Assistant Warden at Grant Parish Detention Center.
Once at the nursing home, Roxy engaged with residents, prompting smiles and enabling them to share memories about their own past pets. Pittman mentioned that staff members received valuable tips on dog care from the residents.
The shelter plans to expand this outreach program to include more schools, nursing homes, and community groups in the area. Pittman encouraged interested parties to contact Grant Parish Animal Control for visit requests or to learn more about their community services.
