Joey serves with the Los Angeles County Fire Department under the guidance of his handler, Louis. After undergoing more than five months of training, they achieved their certification in September 2025. When a devastating earthquake struck Venezuela in June, the pair was deployed to assist in the search for survivors.

They arrived three days post-quake, where families anxiously awaited updates about their loved ones. Amidst the devastation, Joey used his training to successfully identify three individuals trapped beneath the debris. Louis remarked on the importance of their canine team's work, stating, "When we get those live alerts, it’s not only good as a canine team, but it’s also for our department and our nation."

Joey's training proved vital for this mission, with Louis expressing pride in being able to contribute to the rescue efforts. Beyond his search and rescue duties, Joey offers comfort to fellow firefighters at the station and enjoys recreational activities with his family during downtime. His efforts have garnered recognition, as he is now a semifinalist in the law enforcement and first responder category of the American Humane Hero Dog Awards.

A firefighter noted the positive impact Joey has on their team, saying, "He’s here for us. He helps us." After his shifts, Joey is ready to indulge in his favorite activities, which include chasing balls and curling up with his loved ones.
