NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Animal Care Centers of New York City is enhancing the comfort of shelter dogs and cats as they await adoption, providing items like blankets, toys, and treats. This initiative gained momentum through the story of Harper, a dog who spent over a year at the ACC before finding her forever home. Volunteer Allie Grippo took Harper on 'borough breaks' for daylong adventures around the city, leading her to recognize the need for better environments for shelter animals.

This inspiration resulted in the creation of The Kennel Makeover Project. Grippo noted, "I just posted it, and I never expected people to want to help or donate to the dogs." Following her outreach, the project received significant community support and contributions.

The project accepts various items, including toys, blankets, beds, and treats. Grippo emphasized the importance of a relaxed dog for adoption success: "When they're enjoying a chew, they're just calmer which helps them show better for adopters." The initiative has expanded to include cat items and is now improving kennels in New Jersey, particularly at the Jersey City Division of Animal Care & Control.
