Projected growth in pet nutrition retail sales is set at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.9% through 2030, according to Euromonitor. This growth reflects an increase in pet ownership, heightened spending on health-focused nutrition, and a trend toward premium products in both developed and emerging markets.
Three key consumer trends are shaping the market:
1. Clean Labels and Recognizable Ingredients: Pet owners are applying their dietary preferences to pet food, leading to increased scrutiny of ingredients. Simple and natural ingredients are preferred, with a 2025 Innova Pet Owners Survey indicating that 62% of pet owners switch foods based on ingredient lists, while 64% aim to avoid artificial additives. Brands that simplify their recipes and clearly communicate ingredient choices will be better positioned to meet these consumer demands.
2. Trust in Science-Backed Ingredients: A 2025 ADM OutsideVoice℠ survey found that 77% of global pet parents are willing to pay more for products with functional ingredients, and 84% express interest in items that may extend their pet's lifespan. Consumers seek increased transparency and credible research for pet products, prompting brands to consider recognizable, branded ingredients and scientifically validated health claims.
3. Shift to Premium-ized Value: Pet parents are balancing their desire for high-quality products with the need for value amid economic uncertainties. This has led to a rise in both premiumization and the market share of private label brands, which are expanding their pet product lines to match national brands. Companies should focus on offering affordable products with premium nutrition and quality ingredients to meet evolving consumer expectations.
