Lorelei Derenne, a student in the Class of 2028 from Vancouver, WA, is undertaking a summer research fellowship to explore treatments for primary canine glaucoma, a painful condition that can lead to blindness in dogs. Her research focuses on three prevalent treatments: latanoprost, dorzolamide, and a combination of dorzolamide and timolol, all of which aim to lower intraocular pressure through different mechanisms. While these medications are frequently prescribed, much of the prior research has been limited to healthy dogs or specific breeds. To fill this gap, Derenne is conducting a two-phase study that includes a meta-analysis of existing literature and a retrospective review of clinical cases at a regional specialty eye clinic.

By evaluating the effectiveness of these treatments in dogs with naturally occurring glaucoma, her research seeks to determine which medications are most effective in preserving vision and slowing the disease's progression. The results could lead to more evidence-based treatment options and enhance the quality of life for affected dogs.

Derenne expresses that this project aligns with her academic interests and aspirations in veterinary medicine. "This disease has a negative impact on the quality of life of many animals," she said. "I want to expand our knowledge of treating this disease and make a difference in the field of veterinary ophthalmology."
