SPCA Cincinnati recently launched a new adoption center located at 1312 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine. Established in 1873 as the Ohio Humane Society, the SPCA has a long history of animal rescue in the region. CEO and President Chris Seelbach recognized the need for more accessible adoption services upon taking over in 2025, noting that one shelter in Sharonville was insufficient given the demand for animal adoptions.

Seelbach emphasized the importance of reducing the length of stay for dogs at shelters, which led to discussions about opening a new facility in a vibrant community. Influenced by a conversation with a leader from Dogs Playing for Life, he decided to bring adoptable animals into the heart of city life, where local residents could easily connect with them.
The new 1,795 square-foot facility offers a more intimate adoption experience and features space for six dogs, equipped with a storefront style viewing area designed to resemble a living room. This allows passersby to see the dogs, while a dedicated space for cats includes a quiet area for older cats and an energetic Kitten Colony at the front where visitors can observe playful kittens.
Since its opening less than a week ago, the center has generated significant interest among animal lovers and local celebrities. Notably, on its opening day, some well-known figures, including Sam Hubbard and Andrew Abbot, attended, and one dog was adopted within two hours of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Seelbach expressed joy seeing community members engage with the display windows and the animal residents, highlighting the connection that pets can create for individuals seeking companionship. He reiterated the SPCA’s goal to integrate more deeply into the community and facilitate matches between animals and families.
The SPCA Cincinnati adoption center is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. at its new Over-the-Rhine location.
