Cubby, a 10-week-old black Labrador retriever, is the newest addition to the Park City Mountain avalanche rescue team. She is currently undergoing training alongside Ski Patroller Abby Owens, who has cared for Cubby since she was 7.5 weeks old. The puppy was named for her resemblance to a bear cub.

In her first three weeks, Cubby has started learning basic commands such as sit, stay, and down. These initial skills are crucial for her future role as a rescue dog, allowing her to effectively communicate with Owens during avalanche situations.

Owens reported that Cubby has already mastered the commands “sit” and “down” and is now sleeping through the night. Training has focused on crate habits, manners, and socialization, exposing Cubby to a range of experiences.

Cubby is joining a team of 13 avalanche rescue dogs at Park City Mountain, many of whom are also Labrador retrievers—a breed known for its strong work ethic, athleticism, and curiosity.

In the future, Cubby aims to achieve certification through Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, a nonprofit that trains resort dogs in the state. The certification process includes moving from “candidate” status to being fully certified for operations at home resorts and statewide.

Visitors to Park City Mountain are encouraged to look out for Cubby and Ski Patrol while giving them ample space on the slopes. It's advised to check in with handlers before approaching the dogs.
