Opening on October 1, 2025, the shelter serves unincorporated areas of Volusia County as well as the cities of Oak Hill and Pierson. In its inaugural year, the facility facilitated over 250 adoptions and successfully reunited more than 250 lost pets with their owners. Additionally, nearly 200 animals were transferred to partner rescues for further adoption processes, while more than 70 animals entered foster care.
The shelter also cared for over 130 animals involved in investigations, including cases where Animal Services supported first responders due to an owner's hospitalization, death, or incarceration. Its services have extended beyond its primary jurisdiction, as multiple municipalities across Volusia County have contracted with the shelter to house dogs undergoing dangerous dog quarantine investigations.
Angela Miedema, Director of Volusia County Animal Services, emphasized the shelter's importance to both animals and the community. She stated that the first year has demonstrated the shelter’s critical role in caring for animals, supporting cruelty investigations, housing dangerous dogs, and helping hundreds of animals find new homes.
Located at 2120 E. International Speedway Blvd. in DeLand, the shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with pets available for adoption viewable online at www.volusia.gov/adoption.
