Core rotations within the program will include internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, emergency and critical care, cardiology, oncology, neurology, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, and clinical pathology. Interns may also have the option to participate in elective rotations such as exotics, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, primary care, pathology, radiation oncology, nutrition, and behavior, along with potential research opportunities.

UC Davis states that interns will receive supervised, hands-on experience with emergency, first-opinion, referral, and specialty cases, while honing their clinical judgment, communication, and teaching abilities. As their competency develops, interns will take on more responsibilities for patient care in conjunction with specialists and residents. The program is designed to prepare participants for residency training, specialty or referral practice, emergency medicine, academic careers, or general practice.

Applications for the internship will be accepted until January 4, 2027, through the Veterinary Intern and Resident Matching Program. Additional information is available on the UC Davis Small Animal Rotating Internship webpage.
