This update is based on research initiated a decade ago by Drs. Benjamin and Lynette Hart at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Their initial focus was on Golden Retrievers, revealing that a significant number of dogs neutered before 12 months developed hip dysplasia as adults. The early neutering negatively impacted growth plate and joint development.
Dr. Lynette Hart notes, “It wasn’t a kind of work that people were interested in at the beginning. They didn’t even like it.” Their findings confirmed the crucial role hormones play in canine health, prompting further research on spaying and neutering timelines for other breeds.
Delaying these procedures is suggested to help avoid health issues. Dr. Hart explains that early spaying or neutering can misalign bone growth and increase the risk of conditions such as hip dysplasia and certain cancers, particularly in Golden Retrievers.
The updated findings suggest that:
- German Shorthaired and German Wirehaired Pointers should not be neutered or spayed before 12 months.
- Male Siberian Huskies should not be neutered before 6 months, and females should wait until 12 months.
- Rhodesian Ridgebacks, regardless of sex, should not be altered before 6 months.
- Mastiff males should wait until 24 months, while females should not be spayed before 12 months.
- Newfoundlands should also be spayed or neutered after 12 months.
Additionally, research highlights specific issues within different breeds, such as female Shetland Sheepdogs being at risk for urinary incontinence if spayed before 24 months. Interestingly, early spaying has not been linked to increased joint disorders in female Pugs.
The findings also revealed differences between breeds. For example, despite similar traits, Labrador Retrievers are not similarly affected by early altering as Golden Retrievers are.
Drs. Hart faced initial skepticism from the veterinary community regarding their findings, particularly concerning Golden Retrievers. However, over time, the significance of their research has been recognized, prompting additional studies on canine health and behavior.
In managing intact dogs, owners should take precautions to prevent unintended breeding, including keeping the dog leashed in public and ensuring secure containment at home. Options for hormone-preserving sterilization methods are also suggested for those considering altering their pets.
