Mars, Incorporated has released new research indicating that nearly one-third of prospective pet adopters are hesitant due to uncertainties regarding pets’ health, behavior, and compatibility. To address these concerns, Mars is launching an online Adoption Hub that offers practical guidance and expert advice aimed at overcoming these barriers to pet adoption.

In conjunction with this initiative, Mars is expanding its Global Adoption Weekend in 2026 to over 30 countries, which will support a greater number of local shelters than before.
The research, part of the Mars State of the Pet Homelessness Project, surveyed over 26,000 participants across 14 countries. It found that while 58% of current pet owners did not adopt their pets, 28% expressed interest in adopting in the future if provided with adequate guidance and support.
Common concerns cited by those considering adoption included unknown medical histories (33%), behavioral issues (27%), and compatibility with their households (25%). Furthermore, 71% of adopters change their pets' diets after adoption, highlighting a demand for nutritional guidance to ensure proper diet during the transition.
Esther Bijsmans, a veterinarian and expert in Pet Nutrition & Health Science at Mars, emphasized the importance of practical guidance in fostering successful pet adoptions. She noted the significance of the "3-3-3 rule"—focusing on safety in the first three days, establishing routines in three weeks, and developing a bond within three months.
The Mars Adoption Hub aims to provide expert-backed resources for both pre- and post-adoption support, emphasizing the emotional rewards of pet adoption, such as witnessing a pet relax in their new home (43%) and feeling they belong to the family (41%).
Anthony Guerrieri, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Pet Nutrition at Mars, stated that the research highlights a strong desire among people to adopt pets, but also their uncertainties about the process. The goal is to alleviate these anxieties by providing clear guidance from the outset and supporting shelters during Global Adoption Weekend.
