Allison Recancoj: A Leader in Veterinary Medicine Advocating for Animal Welfare and Team Development

Her academic journey began at the University of California, Davis, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences, complemented by a minor in Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology. This strong scientific foundation instilled in her a profound passion for animal health, backed by certifications as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), and Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT/RALAT).

Recancoj's career commenced at Banfield Pet Hospital, starting as a client-facing receptionist before transitioning to a veterinary assistant role. This position allowed her to gain direct clinical experience by supporting veterinarians, assisting with diagnostics and treatments, and facilitating communication with pet owners.

She advanced her career at Pet Care Animal Hospital, where her role as a veterinary assistant expanded to include responsibilities as an inventory manager. In this capacity, she oversaw procurement, supply chain management, budgeting, and cost control, which enhanced her interest in leadership and operational efficiency.

Most recently, Recancoj held a position at Labcorp Early Drug Development, serving as Team Lead Veterinary Technician within veterinary operations. In this role, she managed and mentored veterinary technicians, designed training programs, and implemented workflow improvements, all while performing a variety of clinical duties such as administering medications and conducting surgeries.

For Recancoj, effective leadership means fostering a collaborative environment where veterinary professionals can thrive. She is particularly dedicated to mentoring the next generation of veterinary technicians, emphasizing that strong teams lead to better outcomes for animals.

Her perseverance in the field stems from personal experiences, including challenges associated with being a young Latina in an industry where she sometimes faced doubts regarding her capabilities. Nonetheless, she has remained determined to forge a fulfilling career that enhances both animal welfare and the professional development of her peers.
