Pumpkin, a rescue cat, arrived at the SPCA Cincinnati animal shelter in March after her owner passed away. Chris Seelbach, the organization's CEO and president, was prepared for the possibility of encountering animals that had been neglected or abused; however, Pumpkin was not one of those cases. At 25 pounds (11.3 kg), she was severely obese, which hindered her movement and caused her considerable breathing difficulties during her examination.

The shelter team discovered that Pumpkin, believed to be around five years old, had likely gained her excess weight after having two litters and being overfed. Seelbach described how her expressive eyes seemed to plead for help, even as she lay unable to lift her head.
Seelbach and her husband decided to foster Pumpkin, introducing her to their other cats, Jerry, Doe, and Dottie. Despite her unique challenges, Pumpkin proved to be no threat to them due to her limited mobility. She primarily rests on her cat bed and is adjusting to a new diet.
After sharing videos of Pumpkin online, Seelbach was surprised by the response; she gained millions of views. People approached her on the street asking if she was “Pumpkin’s dad,” and many expressed their affection and admiration for the cat.
Pumpkin's story resonated with many, and Seelbach found fulfillment in fostering other animals as well. They have officially adopted her, planning to celebrate her sixth birthday with a party on Halloween. Pumpkin's health is improving; she has lost nearly 3 pounds since her adoption and can now climb on the couch to be with her feline family. Seelbach credits her progress to a healthier diet and the positive energy from her online fans.
