Plans have been filed to convert a former milking parlour in Heads Nook, near Brampton, into an indoor dog enrichment facility. Judith Nicholson submitted the application to Cumberland Council, proposing to change the use of an existing agricultural building at Applegarth into what will be known as Applegarth Sniffery.

The new facility aims to complement the Applegarth Sniffari Dog Field, which has been operating for over two years with a pre-booked and time-managed schedule, reportedly without any noise or highway impact complaints.
The indoor facility will utilize an existing building and an adjoining lean-to, with no new construction planned. Currently, the site serves as a shelter for ponies and storage for horse equipment.
Proposed internal enhancements include a non-slip, washable floor, enrichment equipment, scent work tools, soft play structures, climbing features, and a ball pool. The application states that the facility will offer a secure environment for the enrichment and exercise of pet dogs.
Activities will be available by private hire on a pre-booked basis, distinctly separate from dog day-care or kennel services. Sessions are planned to last around 45 minutes, accommodating up to six dogs per session, with operating hours set from 7am to 8pm daily, including bank holidays.
The facility is designed to provide a structured indoor environment for dog exercise and enrichment, particularly benefiting smaller breeds, older dogs, and those recovering from injuries or exhibiting reactive behaviors in public settings. It seeks to foster responsible dog ownership while minimizing the risks associated with livestock worrying and dog conflicts in public spaces.
A supporting letter from Craig Robinson Vets highlighted that they frequently encounter dogs that struggle in typical outdoor environments due to anxiety, fear-based behaviors, or medical issues. Cumberland Council will review the application in the near future.
