Deemed too small for the shelter's available mobility devices, veterinary assistant lead Mallory Smith devised a creative solution using cardboard, rulers, Hot Wheels toy cars, and duct tape. "He really wanted to play and walk around,” Smith told Local 12 News. “So, I used what I had.”
The shelter shared on Instagram that innovation is key in shelter medicine, stating, “a little creativity can go a very long way.” Gelato currently uses a wheelchair inspired by “Transformers” while in the care of Smith, and he is reported to be growing stronger every day. The shelter noted, “It’s already making a difference,” indicating that Gelato has begun to stand briefly on his own.
The veterinary team remains optimistic about Gelato’s recovery, mentioning that while many disabled pets benefit from wheelchairs, he may not need one in the future.
