In her response letter, Hope Rescue's CEO, Vanessa Waddon, clarified that while she respects Jones’s right to his views on greyhound racing, she found his comments concerning animal welfare organizations to be unnecessary and offensive. Waddon emphasized that animal welfare is a vital cross-party issue, and it is important for charities to engage with elected officials to advocate for better animal welfare policies.
Waddon acknowledged the contentious nature of specific issues like greyhound racing but stressed that such disagreements should not detract from the valuable contributions of organizations like Hope Rescue. She invited Jones to reconsider his language, arguing that labeling animal welfare advocates as lobbyists misrepresents the dedication and hard work of these charities.
Hope Rescue collaborates with other organizations in the #CutTheChase coalition, which includes Greyhound Rescue Wales, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross, and the RSPCA. Together, they rescue and rehome thousands of animals each year, support local authorities with stray dog issues, aid pet owners in crisis, and combat animal cruelty.
Waddon highlighted the increasing demand for their services amid an ongoing animal welfare crisis, urging a respectful dialogue between politicians and the voluntary sector. She invited Jones to participate in the World Animal Day Celebrations at the Senedd on September 30 to discuss these important issues.
