Mobile Dog Gym Provides Safe Exercise for Pets Amid Heat Warnings

Maddie Radcliff, the owner of Maddie and the Zoomie Squad, operates a fully air-conditioned van equipped with a dog-powered treadmill that she brings directly to clients' locations. She also collaborates with the Hamilton County Humane Society to enhance the well-being of shelter dogs.

Radcliff explained that a 30-minute session in her facility is equivalent to a two-hour walk outside for dogs. Her commitment to animal welfare stems from her personal experience with rescue dogs, including two that require different types of energy and mental stimulation.

"Animal welfare has really always been a big thing for me. It’s part of who I am," Radcliff said, noting the need for more than just brief outdoor walks for many dogs.

This summer, the dangers of the heat were underscored by the tragic death of a Great Dane named Stitch at Indianapolis Animal Care Services, highlighting the risks of leaving dogs outdoors for extended periods.

Radcliff emphasized the importance of providing climate-controlled exercise options, stating, "Something like what we do here with Zoomie Squad is an awesome alternative because we bring climate-controlled options. Your dog can exercise in a safe space."

Mike O’Brien, a trainer who previously worked with a dog named Bucky before he was at risk of euthanasia, shared how structured exercise has made a difference for pets with behavioral challenges. O’Brien was approached by a rescue organization to take on Bucky, who showed promise despite his earlier struggles.

"Three main elements that can help stabilize a dog like this will be to introduce the dog to new things, teach him new skill sets and give him plenty of mental stimulation and plenty of physical exercise," O’Brien said. He praised Zoomie Squad's treadmill for addressing all these needs in one session.
