The sick cat was brought to the rescue last week, where it was kept under observation until a scheduled veterinary appointment. Upon arrival, the cat displayed illness, aggression, and odd behavior.

The cat was subsequently evaluated at Ringtown Valley Veterinary Hospital, determined to be dangerous, and was humanely euthanized. It was then submitted for rabies testing, which confirmed the virus.

Ringtown Valley Veterinary Hospital also reported the rabies case in Deer Lake. The rescue described the cat as an unneutered gray-and-white male domestic shorthair and provided a photograph and map to assist in identifying anyone who may have come into contact with it.

The rescue did not specify whether the individuals bitten or scratched received medical treatment.

Rabies is a preventable viral disease that affects the central nervous system and typically spreads through bites or scratches from infected animals. Once symptoms appear, it is nearly always fatal.

Those who think they may have been exposed to the cat are advised to immediately wash any bites or scratches with soap and water and seek urgent medical attention. They should also provide health officials with detailed information about the incident and the animal involved.

For more guidance, residents can refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's rabies resource page. Local inquiries can be directed to the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Schuylkill County State Health Center at 570-621-3112.

Residents are urged to avoid handling unfamiliar stray animals or wildlife and to contact animal-control authorities or rescue organizations for assistance. Ringtown Valley Veterinary Hospital also recommended that pet owners ensure their animals are up to date with rabies vaccinations and schedule veterinary appointments if they are not.
