Mobile Animal Services Halts Dog Intakes Due to Respiratory Illness

According to Robert Bryant, director of Animal Services, the decision was made after some incoming dogs exhibited serious respiratory issues. The shelter typically receives between 20 and 40 animals weekly and currently houses around 135 dogs.

The illness is akin to the flu in humans, with symptoms that include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, lethargy, and reduced appetite. In severe cases, dogs may require antibiotics or cough suppressants. Bryant noted that treatment generally involves supportive care, allowing the virus to run its course.

Adoptions have also slowed. Only dogs that are symptom-free, fully vaccinated, and scheduled for adoption appointments are being placed in homes. No timeline has been provided for when intakes and adoptions will resume normal operations.

Bryant emphasized the need for community patience during this process, stating that such illnesses are not uncommon in animal shelters. Dogs showing symptoms have been put in quarantine, though emergency intakes, including those for sick or aggressive animals, will still be considered on a case-by-case basis. Foster parents are encouraged to inform the shelter if their foster dogs exhibit any symptoms to ensure appropriate care.
