Nocturne, a 15-year-old cat, arrived at the ASPCA Adoption Center in July 2025 through a partnership with Animal Care Centers of NYC. Despite being friendly and affectionate, she required medical attention, which the ASPCA provided. Over the next month, Nocturne was diagnosed with early signs of chronic kidney disease and received a special diet to help manage the condition, along with a dental procedure that involved extracting nine teeth.

Once medically cleared, Nocturne moved to a foster home where she waited for adoption. Unfortunately, older cats often take longer to find homes, and Nocturne remained in foster care until late 2025, when Olivia D. discovered her profile on the ASPCA website. Olivia had recently lost her cat, Inks, whom she had adopted eight years prior. Initially unsure about adopting again, she slowly realized how much she missed having a pet. Supported by friends and counseling through her veterinarian, she decided to search for another cat.
Attracted by Nocturne’s similarity to Inks and her gentle, cuddly nature, Olivia couldn’t stop thinking about her until submitting an adoption application. The pair was introduced via a Zoom call with Nocturne's foster caregiver, where Nocturne's charm and lively personality impressed everyone on the call.
Nocturne’s adoption was finalized in early January 2026. While she initially showed caution in her new environment, she soon began seeking Olivia's attention, rubbing against her legs and nudging her for pets. Now called Nox, she has settled into her new home, where cuddle time is a priority.
Although Olivia was aware that senior cats often come with added responsibilities, Nocturne’s needs have been manageable. She has adapted well to her special diet and has had no issues with litter box use. Despite needing assistance with jumping, Olivia provided a footstool to help Nocturne reach her favorite spots comfortably.
Adopting Nocturne has been rewarding for Olivia, who appreciates the affection and trust they've built. She notes that Nocturne has changed her perception of older pets, demonstrating that they can be playful and loving at any age.
Now, Nocturne brings a calming presence into Olivia's life, making everyday moments feel special. Olivia encourages others to consider adopting senior animals, as they often have so much love to give and are waiting for the right person to notice them.
