In recent news, Pet Poison Helpline has reported a rise in calls regarding overdoses of oclacitinib, commonly known as Apoquel. These incidents are primarily due to accidental ingestion rather than any defect in the medication itself. Since June 2023, the FDA has documented 259 overdose reports in dogs and 64 in cats. The risk appears to be higher with the pork liver-flavored chewable form of the drug, particularly affecting cats who may experience more severe complications. Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, senior veterinary toxicologist and director of veterinary medicine at Pet Poison Helpline, advises veterinarians on the importance of educating pet owners in multipet households about the secure storage of this medication.
