They highlighted that dry pet food generally had higher concentrations of microplastics, but wet food contributed to a greater daily intake for pets, as they require more wet food to meet their energy needs.

The researchers are advocating for government regulations that mandate testing for microplastic contamination in processed pet foods, similar to existing legislation aimed at preventing chemical contamination. Dr. James Cooper from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) stated that the agency is closely monitoring emerging data on microplastics in food and feed. He indicated that, based on current information, the FSA believes the presence of microplastics in food and pet food is unlikely to cause harm, although this position will be reassessed as new evidence arises.

Microplastics are not deliberately added to food; they often result from natural processes that fragment plastics and can enter the food chain through animals, plants, or food contact materials. Professor Tamara Galloway from the University of Exeter emphasized that the study underscores pets’ exposure to the same chemical pollutants as humans, while Fiona Mathews from the University of Sussex raised concerns about pets potentially disseminating plastic pollution through their food and waste, which may impact wildlife and the environment.

The exact sources of contamination remain unclear, prompting researchers to call for further studies to identify whether ingredient quality, packaging types, or processing methods contribute predominantly to the issue. A representative from UK Pet Food asserted that their members' products comply with all regulatory standards and assured pet owners of the safety of commercially prepared pet food.

Alison Thomas from Blue Cross mentioned that pets could be at risk of microplastic exposure through various means including plastic bowls, water from plastic bottles, toys, and food packaging. However, she pointed out that there is insufficient detail on where the highest risks lie and what the long-term health effects on pets may be.
