Feeding habits and exercise are significant contributors to pet obesity. Many owners think they are showing affection by feeding table scraps and extra treats, but such behaviors can lead to serious health issues. A study conducted by the University of Liverpool and Mars Petcare’s WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition indicates that obesity can reduce a dog's lifespan by as much as two years.

The primary cause of pet obesity is excessive food intake combined with insufficient exercise. The study found that the effects of being overweight vary by breed, with male German Shepherds losing an average of five months of life and male Yorkshire Terriers losing up to two and a half years.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has been addressing pet obesity and recently highlighted the story of Nelly, a 10-year-old Bulldog who was found abandoned in a park. Weighing in at 32 kilograms, Nelly was significantly above the healthy weight for her breed, equivalent to that of a typical 10-year-old child.

Nelly underwent surgery at Battersea to improve her breathing, a common issue for flat-faced breeds, which was exacerbated by her obesity. Battersea vet Claire Turner noted that over half of British dogs are overweight, underscoring the need for owners to be vigilant about their pets’ health.

Nelly has since been rehomed by Roz Funnell in Hertfordshire, who expressed immediate affection for Nelly upon seeing her at Battersea. After a significant wait, Funnell was thrilled to learn that Nelly was medically cleared for adoption, praising the Battersea staff for their care in preparing her for a new home.

Funnell stated that she plans to consult her vet to establish a diet and exercise regimen for Nelly, aiming for both of them to become healthier together. To prevent obesity in pets, it's advised that owners consult veterinarians for guidance on ideal body weight, ensure adequate exercise, avoid sharing human food, and regularly monitor their pets’ weight.
