Tuskegee University, a member of the UNCF, is aiding students in their career pursuits. Loren McGee, a current student, is working towards a degree in animal, poultry, and veterinary science with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. McGee is a recipient of the UNCF STEM Scholars Program and the Ahmanson Foundation Scholarship, which supports students from Los Angeles. These scholarships have alleviated the financial burden of college, allowing her to focus on her studies. She anticipates graduating in May 2028.

"UNCF has played a significant role in my college journey," McGee stated. "Your support truly makes a difference in my journey."

Her passion for veterinary medicine stems from a desire to serve those in underserved communities. After veterinary school, she aims to provide resources and mentorship to students who may lack access to veterinary experiences and career information. McGee noted that growing up in urban Los Angeles limited her exposure to animal-related careers, a gap she wishes to address.

Tuskegee University attracted McGee for its reputable animal science and pre-veterinary programs. It is notably the only historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the U.S. offering a doctorate in veterinary medicine. The university's 3+1 program, which allows students to complete three years of undergraduate study before entering veterinary school, further appealed to her.

The UNCF STEM Scholars Program helped McGee transition into college life. At the scholarship orientation, she connected with fellow scholars and learned about available resources and programs supporting STEM career pursuits. This sense of belonging was impactful even before she began her studies at Tuskegee.

"It reminds me that I am not only being supported financially, but that my community is investing in my success," she shared.

In addition to her academic pursuits, McGee participates in the Golden Voices concert choir, which has provided her with a creative outlet and a support network while studying away from home. Through the choir, she has engaged in community performances, including events at Iowa State University and in Florida, enriching her experience at Tuskegee.

"To prospective students, I would say to stay open to new experiences and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way," McGee advised.
