The Henry Bergh Award, named after the founder of the ASPCA, is awarded to individuals or organizations demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment to animal welfare. C-RAD stands as a leader in training programs for working dogs used by ski patrol teams and search and rescue organizations in Colorado and other states.

According to the ASPCA, C-RAD's success highlights the extraordinary bond between humans and dogs, showcasing their collaborative abilities to achieve lifesaving outcomes in challenging conditions. The training sessions are filled with excitement, as the dogs eagerly participate in drills, reflecting the organization’s dedication to their well-being throughout the process.

John Reller, a co-founder of C-RAD since its inception in 1990, emphasizes the rewarding nature of working with dogs and making a positive impact on communities. "That bond is the most gratifying element," Reller noted.

C-RAD has received several accolades recently, including the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame’s Top of the Hill Award in 2025, and a documentary crew is currently capturing footage of their training events.

Reller and his dog Arva will travel to New York City on October 8 to accept the Henry Bergh Award. He remarked on the honor, stating, "It has been a humbling privilege to work with dogs and handlers over the years. Receiving the ASPCA’s Henry Bergh Award is beyond words, incredible and immeasurable."

Eric Darling, C-RAD's Executive Director, expressed gratitude for the recognition, acknowledging the collective effort of everyone involved in supporting the teams. "To be acknowledged by the ASPCA for the incredible work the canine avalanche community does is truly extraordinary," he stated.
