The Wake County Animal Center is waiving all adoption fees for the month of August as part of the Clear the Shelters initiative, aiming to find homes for shelter pets and alleviate overcrowding. The center is encouraging residents to adopt dogs and cats at no cost, as their facilities are at capacity with new animals arriving daily.

"Our goal is simple: clear as many kennels as possible and find loving homes for the pets in our care," said Wake County Commissioner Susan Evans. Every adoption creates space for another animal in need, and the center currently has 102 dogs, 26 cats, and 33 kittens available for adoption, in addition to 37 dogs, 17 cats, and 38 kittens in foster care.
All adopted pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to join a new family. Now in its 12th year, Clear the Shelters is a nationwide campaign that has aided over one million shelter pets in finding homes since its inception in 2015. This annual effort involves numerous animal shelters across the U.S., promoting adoption while helping shelters manage their populations.
Interested adopters can view available pets in the animal center's adoption gallery or visit in person. The shelter is open for adoptions from noon to 6 p.m. every day and is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh.
