As of September 23, 2026, there is an urgent need for cat adopters at MSPCA shelters in Massachusetts, which have reached full capacity. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell Animal Medical Center reported that they have taken in at least 88 cats from Worcester County and Berkshire County through voluntary surrenders in collaboration with the Massachusetts Animal Shelter Support coalition.

MSPCA-Angell's Vice President of Animal Protection, Mike Keiley, acknowledged the challenges of accommodating such a large number of cats, particularly when their shelters were already full. "Before we were able to rehome many of them, we got another call for help, and we’re always going to do everything in our power to answer," Keiley stated.
Currently, about 300 cats and kittens are available for adoption across the MSPCA's four shelters, with 53 cats from Berkshire County expected to be available this week. Keiley encouraged potential adopters to visit and consider bringing a cat home. Additionally, he invited those who may not be ready to adopt to assist through fostering, donating, or volunteering.
