Executive Director Jack Frost stated that resolving the crisis necessitates a $206,000 investment to upgrade their sewer line. The center, situated at 1616 Construction Drive in Comstock Township, was originally built as an auto dealership and features a modest septic tank and drain field that were adequate for the previous business's wastewater needs.
However, the center's daily operations, which include large-scale laundry for sanitizing dog beds, blankets, and toys, along with bathing rescued dogs, have exceeded the capacity of the septic system. As a result, the Kalamazoo County Health Department has mandated that the center halt laundry and bathing activities. While volunteers have stepped in to assist with these tasks, Frost has emphasized that this is not a long-term solution.
