This initiative follows recent research from Mars revealing that uncertainty about an animal’s background and insufficient expert guidance are significant barriers for potential adopters, underscoring the need for clear support throughout the adoption process.
The study expands upon the Mars State of Pet Homelessness Project and aims to better understand the obstacles people encounter when considering pet adoption and how these can be addressed to assist more animals in finding permanent homes.
Analyzing responses from over 26,000 participants across 14 countries, the research found that 58 percent of current pet owners did not adopt their pets. However, nearly one-third expressed interest in adopting in the future if provided with adequate guidance and support.
Among prospective adopters, the most prevalent concerns relate to uncertainty about an animal’s medical and behavioral histories as well as compatibility with their household.
Additionally, the research indicates a need for enhanced nutritional advice, revealing that 71 percent of adopters modify their pets' diets after adoption. Expert support can help ensure that new pet parents navigate dietary changes effectively and provide their pets with balanced nutrition safely.
When adequate support is available, the rewards of adoption are evident, with pet owners highlighting the joy of seeing their adopted pets become relaxed and integrated into the family.
“Bringing a pet home should be an exciting milestone, not an overwhelming one,” said Anthony Guerrieri, vice president of Corporate Affairs, Pet Nutrition at Mars. “What this research clearly shows is that people have the heart to adopt, but they often second-guess whether they have the know-how.”
