CARTHAGE, Ill. (WGEM) - Dogs can experience stress and anxiety, particularly when they spend extended periods in shelters, which can negatively impact their mental health and hinder their chances of adoption. The Hearts of Hancock Humane Society aims to improve this situation by raising $800 for their Canine Environmental Enrichment Project.

The funds will be used to construct a swinging platform and three additional platforms of varying heights. Donna Naderhoff, a board member of the humane society, explained that these platforms will provide dogs with opportunities to play, relax, receive training, and become acclimated to new experiences. She noted that these enhancements could also help reduce undesirable behaviors, as stressed dogs may exhibit actions such as spinning or barking, which complicate their adoption prospects.
"To get adopted, they need to make eye contact," Naderhoff stated. "So when I can get a dog to come up and wag its tail and sit nicely and look up into your eyes, boom, that dog’s going home with you. Otherwise, a dog in the corner might elicit sympathy, but the chances of someone wanting to adopt them are pretty slim."
Another objective of the project is to increase volunteer participation. Naderhoff emphasized the importance of socializing dogs with diverse individuals, stating that such interactions enhance their sociability and broaden their appeal to potential adopters.
She encouraged prospective dog owners to have realistic expectations and understand that dogs may not immediately grasp all the house rules, recommending that they reward good behavior.
