The introduction of coyote genes into the chihuahua lineage could have occurred either by accident or through intentional breeding efforts many generations ago. Coyotes, native to North America and slightly smaller than grey wolves, exhibit wild, territorial behaviors, which may contribute to the bold personalities characteristic of chihuahuas.
As dogs known for their “small but mighty” demeanor, chihuahuas display traits such as independence and agility, defying expectations for small, sedentary lapdogs. This discovery provides insights into the genetic diversity among domestic dogs and their complex histories.
