Exposure to family members, food, and allergens like pet dander during this time can influence immune responses. Allergies arise when the immune system overreacts to benign substances such as pollen or dust.

While the genetic basis for allergies is known, most genetic factors serve as risk indicators rather than direct causes. Recent investigations suggest exposure to environmental bacteria may significantly affect allergy development. The human microbiome, particularly in the gut, interacts continuously with the immune system, and when this balance is disrupted, it can lead to inflammation and disease.

Studies of children raised on farms reveal that these environments lower the likelihood of allergies, particularly for those in contact with animals. Farm-raised children often have a more diverse microbiome compared to urban children, which may enhance their immune tolerance and reduce allergy risk.

For urban children, pets could represent their main interaction with animals. Research suggests that having pets can lower the likelihood of developing allergies. However, isolating the influence of pets from other factors like location and family history can be challenging.

Another study in 2025 analyzed genetic data from over 270,000 individuals and found a gene associated with eczema increased the risk only in children without prior dog exposure, implying that early dog interaction might protect genetically predisposed children.

The relationship between pets and asthma is not as straightforward. A 2001 study following 1,000 children in the U.S. found those living with indoor dogs were less likely to develop frequent wheezing, but only if they had no family history of asthma. In contrast, a 2021 South Korean study noted that children with dogs had a higher risk of non-allergic wheeze, indicating that while dogs may mitigate allergic responses, they could also pose risks for certain respiratory issues.

When examining cats, research indicates that living with them does not seem to reduce allergy risk as effectively as dogs, possibly due to differing microbial influences.

For parents considering a pet, evidence suggests that early exposure to dogs can lower the risk of eczema and possibly other allergic conditions. While not a guarantee, pet ownership may yield additional benefits, including companionship and joy. If a dog isn’t feasible, fostering outdoor play and reducing reliance on disinfectants can also enhance immune resilience.
