Virginia Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Animal Cruelty and Fraud

Rodney Travis Jr. was arrested earlier this year by Henrico police and faced multiple charges, including six counts of felony animal cruelty and three counts of felony computer fraud. He pleaded guilty to all charges.

Investigators described videos featuring a gray striped tabby cat named Hayden, which appeared to be bleeding. Evidence revealed that Travis rented hotel rooms in Henrico multiple times to record these videos, which were shared on social media platforms, including Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, between January 21 and February 13.

Prosecutors stated that the videos claimed the cat suffered from cancer and requested donations for treatment, which turned out to be part of a scam. A fraudulent vet bill totaling $35,892.14 was also found in the materials.

On February 13, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Travis’ home in Chesterfield, where six cats were rescued; unfortunately, one died en route to the veterinary center. Authorities confirmed that Travis had tortured a total of 26 cats, resulting in two confirmed deaths and an additional 18 presumed dead. Most of the cats were reported to have been drugged and beaten.

Travis reportedly defrauded individuals of approximately $400,000 through the scheme. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dylan McCauley highlighted disturbing video evidence, where Travis could be seen laughing while recording the abuse.

He used aliases to adopt two cats from Cat’s Cradle, prompting the rescue group to become suspicious when he demanded another cat. They eventually identified his intentions and refused to return the cat to him.

Other rescue organizations also became aware of Travis's activities after being alerted and recognized him as the same individual who had adopted another cat.

McCauley explained that tips from individuals around the globe, including those from France and the U.K., played a crucial role in Travis’ arrest, occurring within 24 hours of the report. Aside from his prison sentence, Travis has been ordered to pay approximately $25,000 in fines and is scheduled for further sentencing on related charges in December.
