Princess Astrid's Chihuahua Wilma Finds New Home with Family

Initially, there was no public information about Wilma's next home, and Solplassen, the shelter where Astrid adopted her, stated that the 12-year-old dog would be welcomed back if necessary. The shelter, which also functions as a retirement home for older dogs, indicated that a return would be welcomed. However, it has now been confirmed that this will not be the case. In a statement shared on social media, Solplassen mentioned that both the royal family and the palace have assured them that Wilma is receiving excellent care and is now happily residing with one of Princess Astrid's children.

The family has not disclosed which of Astrid's five children—Cathrine, Benedikte, Alexander, Elisabeth, or Carl-Christian—has taken Wilma in, maintaining their privacy. Princess Astrid had a long history with dogs, receiving her first pet on her second birthday, and later adopting rescues like her previous dog Tarzan, who she lost shortly before acquiring Wilma.

During an interview marking her 93rd birthday, Astrid reflected on her bond with Wilma, stating, "Wilma is everything to me. A whole new world opened up after she came home. I had lost my previous dog, and I felt a great emptiness. It was wonderful to have her."

Wilma's journey to Princess Astrid began with love when her first owner, an elderly woman suffering from terminal cancer, entrusted her to Solplassen out of concern for the dog's future. Marianne Øyen of Solplassen noted the woman's relief when Wilma found a new home with the princess in October 2022.

Princess Astrid's funeral will take place today at Ris Church in Oslo, following the recent death of her younger brother, King Harald V. As the last surviving child of King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha, Astrid's passing marks the end of an era for Norway's royal family, but Wilma remains a cherished reminder of her legacy.
