Rescue Kitten ChipPurr Jones Throws First Pitch for Gwinnett Stripers

Tricia Wurmstein, the Stripers' marketing manager and ChipPurr’s handler, expressed her pride in the kitten's performance, saying, "Honestly, it went so much better than I anticipated. He was ready for the moment." Videos from the event captured the kitten’s journey to home plate amidst the sounds of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.” Though he did not interact with the ball, the atmosphere surrounding his appearance was festive, coinciding with the team’s "Purr in the Park" night, which also featured a pet supply donation drive for local shelters.

Wurmstein shared that ChipPurr's journey to the team began when he was discovered on a busy street near the stadium. A staff member rescued him from traffic and brought him to safety. Wurmstein, a longtime cat lover, quickly adopted him, stating, "Yep, we will be keeping this cat. By 'we,' I mean me."

As ChipPurr settled in at the stadium, Wurmstein integrated him into the team's social media, even organizing a naming poll for fans. Now estimated to be about six weeks old, he lives at the stadium with a variety of toys, including foam baseballs. Wurmstein monitors him closely, even installing a camera to watch over him.

After ChipPurr receives his vaccinations in the coming days, he will move in with Wurmstein and her other cat, with plans for a gradual introduction. Wurmstein hopes ChipPurr's story can inspire kindness towards both humans and animals, emphasizing the importance of compassion given the unfortunate circumstances that brought the kitten into their care. Meanwhile, Chipper Jones has expressed admiration for his young namesake.
