Dr. Amilton de Mello, an associate professor in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, will oversee the program. He emphasized that the curriculum will cover essential topics including breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, animal health and welfare, as well as meat production. The program aims to prepare students to tackle contemporary challenges in sustainability and meat production, focusing on producing more nutritious products while minimizing ecological impact.
Dr. Mike Teglas, chair of UNR’s Agriculture, Veterinary and Rangeland Sciences Department, noted that the program will equip students for careers in ranching, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, and related industries. He pointed out that research indicates a strong demand for this degree in Nevada and nearby states.
The new program is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experiences, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to support animal welfare and food production industries. UNR had previously offered courses and specializations in animal science but is now formalizing this into a full degree program.
