Washington, D.C.—A recent study published in Microbiology Spectrum reveals that two strains of probiotics can effectively reduce weight in obese dogs. The research, led by Dr. Younghoon Kim from Seoul National University, focuses on metabolic diseases in companion animals, particularly the obesity epidemic affecting pets globally.

The study points out that approximately 50% of pets across all age groups are obese, with many undergoing treatments including dietary interventions. This alarming trend prompted Kim and his team to identify probiotics that could serve as long-term and safe treatment options for reducing body fat in pets.

Kim emphasized the importance of increasing awareness about the potential of probiotics in addressing various health issues in companion animals. He seeks more research and funding to explore the therapeutic uses of probiotics in enhancing pet health.

The researchers examined the intestinal microbiota differences between young and old dogs, noting a decline in beneficial bacteria such as lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium species in older dogs. This insight led them to test two specific strains: Enterococcus faecium IDCC 2102 and Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301, administered alongside a high-fat diet to a group of beagles.

The findings indicated significant reductions in body fat and improvements in gut flora imbalances caused by obesity. Kim noted that these probiotic strains effectively increased energy metabolism and reduced body weight, even on a high-calorie diet, confirming a shift towards fat consumption in the body.

The study also revealed reductions in systemic inflammation and improvements in insulin production among dogs consuming the probiotics, which can combat obesity-related health issues. Additionally, the balance of beneficial bacteria was restored, enhancing the immune system.

Kim highlighted that the positive effects of these probiotics appear to be lasting, suggesting potential long-term benefits for the health regimen of companion animals. Despite increased interest in health-related products for pets, research on specific probiotics for dogs remains limited compared to that for humans.
