By 9 a.m., volunteers are finalizing welcome materials and presentations. The students arrive at the campus at 10:30 a.m., with some visibly taking in their new surroundings while others eagerly anticipate their introduction to veterinary medicine. Many have never been on a college campus before, which adds significance to the event for both students and organizers.
After a welcome presentation, the students split into three groups to explore various veterinary medicine topics. A standout moment occurs in the Clinical Skills Lab, where Dr. Doreen Vaughn teaches students how to bandage animal limbs, emphasizing the knowledge and creativity needed in veterinary practice.
The Anatomy Lab further engages the students as they compare animal skulls, linking tooth structures with dietary habits and lifestyles. Their curiosity intensifies as they learn about the complexities of anatomy and physiology.
One of the day's highlights is meeting wildlife ambassadors. Students enthusiastically interact with snakes, owls, and opossums, asking insightful questions about wildlife medicine and conservation. This engagement illustrates the diverse career paths within veterinary medicine.
Volunteers witness a transformation in the students throughout the day; those who started off shy become more confident, eagerly participating and sharing their newfound knowledge. This growth underscores the importance of early exposure to science and higher education.
The experience holds personal significance for many volunteers, including the program's founder, Dr. Naomi Esquivel, a VetMed graduate from the Little Village neighborhood. Esquivel aims to inspire students to pursue educational opportunities at the University of Illinois.
As the day concludes with a group photo at the Illini Union and popsicles, the enthusiasm of the departing students reflects the potential impact of this experience on their futures.
