Dr. Bruce Randolph, the Interim Director and Health Officer of the Shelby County Health Department, emphasized the importance of pet vaccination: "Rabies is a serious threat to both human and animal health. Unvaccinated pets may be exposed to rabies when they encounter a wild animal with the virus. If they develop rabies, that increases the risk of human rabies exposure. For that reason, pet vaccination protects humans as well as pets. Pet vaccinations also keep pets healthy and protect our children, friends, and neighbors against rabies."
Pet owners must present a valid ID to confirm their Shelby County residency and ensure pets are restrained with leashes or pet carriers. Each vehicle may bring a maximum of five pets.
