Elisabetta Pierangelo, Global VP of R&D at Mars Pet Nutrition, emphasizes the importance of recognizing how dogs enrich human lives. She states, “International Dog Day is a great reminder of just how much our dogs enrich our lives. It’s important that we never stop being curious about how we can enrich theirs.”
Mars Pet Nutrition outlines significant scientific advancements that impact canine diets, focusing on gut health, vitamin D, the first year of life, sustainable nutrition, and oral care. Gut health is emerging as a critical aspect of dog well-being. Research into the gut microbiome is transforming dog food formulations, highlighting how beneficial microorganisms in the digestive tract affect overall health. The inclusion of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics in pet foods aims to support and shape the gut microbiome, promoting lifelong health and well-being.
The transition from puppy to adult food should ideally occur at or after 12 months, based on the dog's projected adult size. Mars points out that vitamin D is essential for bone growth but cannot be produced by dogs through sunlight exposure. Thus, it is vital for dogs to obtain vitamin D through their diet, along with other necessary nutrients.
The first 12 months of a puppy’s life are critical for development, requiring them to consume significantly more fat and protein than adult dogs. Mars notes that nutrient deficiencies during this period can lead to growth issues, weak bones, and other health complications.
Additionally, sustainable nutrition is becoming increasingly relevant in pet food formulations. The company highlights advancements in sustainable ingredient sourcing, including the rise of insect protein, which offers high-quality protein with a reduced environmental impact.
Dental health remains a pressing concern, with four out of five dogs over the age of three suffering from gum disease. Mars recommends dental chews that meet Veterinary Oral Health Council standards as a way to improve canine dental care.
