LINCOLN, Neb. — Four dogs were rescued from Conestoga Lake last week and taken to the Capital Humane Society in Lincoln. The dogs were found emaciated, anemic, and covered in urine. One of the dogs has since been euthanized due to the severity of its condition, while the other three are recovering and preparing for adoption.

Maisie, a two-year-old Husky mix, was discovered alongside her siblings in early October 2026, each weighing under 10 pounds, far below their expected weight of 20 to 30 pounds for their age, as noted by Nadia Postek, director of animal welfare at the Capital Humane Society.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Capt. John Vik expressed sadness over the animals' condition and emphasized the need for public assistance in identifying those responsible for abandoning the dogs. The investigation is challenging, as the dogs’ small size initially led to the belief that they were puppies.
Vik stated, “We never want to see an animal starve, and it appears that that’s what happened in this case, but we need some additional information from the public to determine exactly what happened.”
One of the rescued dogs, Maisie, required blood transfusions at a veterinary hospital. Along with Milo and Winnie, two other two-year-old Husky mixes, they are on the road to recovery. Postek hopes they will soon find permanent homes, likely starting with foster care to help them regain weight before adoption.
The treatment of the dogs is funded by the Zephyr’s Fighting Chance Fund, established in honor of another rescued dog from the previous year.
